Sol Plaatje opens R28 million landfill complex | News Article

Executive Mayor of Kimberley, Mangaliso Matika, opened a revamped landfill complex of about R28 million today.

The landfill was constructed to curb illegal dumping in Sol Plaatje Local Municipality and to create jobs for community members. Several high mast lights and a fence have been added as security features to the complex after several criminal incidents in the past. According to the municipality’s Thoko Riet, the landfill will also allow community members to process recyclable materials for a profit…

“It is going to assist us in terms of curbing the illegal dumping that has been taking place all over the city. We have a serious challenge of dump throughout the municipality. That is compounded by the fact that there have been safety issues raised around the landfill. The upgrade of the municipal landfill has been done in line with benchmark standards set around the country to ensure that it responds to modern day demands of waste management,” explained Riet.
