As the country continues to mourn the death of a struggle stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, questions regarding the unaccounted millions earmarked to turn her house in Brandford, Free State into a museum are mounting.

By last year June when OFM News visited the historic site, it was discovered that more than R1,8 million of the R3 million allocated for the project had already been spent, with less to show for it.

The dilapidated historic site had turned into a hub of criminal activities where community members alleged it became a house for teenagers who smoke illegal substances and where young girls got raped.

Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Maggie Sotyu, accompanied by the Free State MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mathabo Leeto, during their site visit committed to ensure that construction at the planned museum, which was supposed to have been built more than a decade ago was to soon get underway.

They told OFM News architectural plans for the house- planned to be a museum- were already underway and that the national department was to work hand-in-hand with the provincial Department of Arts and Culture to ensure that the plan materialises.

Following her death yesterday, some social media users have lambasted the government for the incomplete project, saying the house is still far from resembling a museum.

Free State Department of Arts and Culture is yet to respond to OFM News’ enquires in this regard.
