Issues relating to the refurbishment of the anti-apartheid struggle stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s house in Brandfort – in order to open it as a museum - are expected to come under the loop today.

This will happen as the Free State Government holds a provincial memorial service for her.

The house in which the struggle icon had lived for ten years, while she was banished by the apartheid government, has attracted much controversy as the project stands dilapidated and millions are unaccounted for.

This historic site had turned into a hub of criminal activities where community members allege it has become a house where teenagers smoked illegal substances and where young girls were raped. When OFM News last visited the site, it was discovered that more than R1,8 million of the R3 million that was allocated for the project had already been spent, with less to show for it. ANC provincial spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, however, echoes Secretary General Ace Magashule words and says there is no corruption involved in the project and it will certainly materialise.

Meeko says the project can be expected to be completed by 2019 and more details in this regard will be revealed later today, prior to the memorial service, which will start at 14:00 at the Brandfort Community Hall.
