Police have arrested nine people for public violence and malicious damage to property after community protests in Mahikeng, North West, yesterday.
According to police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, most of the protestors were high school children.
Myburgh says a truck trailer was torched during the night in Moshawane village, while a vehicle and truck were set alight separately along the Mahikeng-Vryburg Road. The roads are still barricaded with rocks and burning tyres. Motorists are asked to comply with law enforcement officials and asked to take alternative roads.
“They are expected to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court soon. There were also reported incidents of looting,” says Myburgh.
Meanwhile, police are deployed in the area, monitoring the situation until normality is restored.
