Several schools in the Heilbron area that were closed down by the riots in the area last week, have reopened their doors for teaching and learning today.

Peace and order were restored after Ngwathe Local Municipality met with stakeholders to discuss the concerns of residents.

Municipal Spokesperson, Steve Naale, confirmed to OFM News that issues such as the reopening of the nine affected schools, community businesses, and stability in the town were discussed.

Damage to municipal properties is estimated at R10 million. Naale says the reopening of the schools was part of the agreement between stakeholders in an effort to restore peace and order.

Naale adds that talks with community leaders will be ongoing to ensure that outstanding matters are resolved and all parties have agreed that intimidation and destruction of property will be stopped with immediate effect.

He says the only shopping centre in Phiritona was also damaged by the protesters last week.

He further says stakeholders are requested to cooperate peacefully and a progress meeting shall be convened to check progress as per the outcomes and declaration.

Learners are back in school and are preparing for the exams. Normal day to day life is back on track,” says Naale.

The Free State Department of Education is yet to comment.
