The North West government has come out in defence of its decision to put only eight of its struggling municipalities under administration.

Premier Job Mokgoro was lambasted by opposition parties and the South African National Civil organisation (Sanco) for announcing the list of municipalities where the government is intervening.

The premier’s spokesperson, Vuyisile Ngesi, says they carefully considered the intervention following an assessment by the Executive Council (Exco) and the Department of Human Settlements. But DA MPL, Joe McGluwa, says not a single municipality received a clean audit during the 2016/17 financial year.

He says it is shocking that some of the biggest culprits with irregular expenditure, such as Rustenburg municipality with R983,5 million and Madibeng municipality with R561,9 million, are not even on the list.

McGluwa says they want to know what procedures were followed and if the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and the Legislature played a role in the decision.

“The premier has lots to answer on what procedure he has followed, so we are saying that this province is on its knees and if the premier is going to instil a factional approach to solve issues, it will not be to the advantage of this province. We are not happy about what is happening. Actually every single municipality was supposed to be under administration,” says McGluwa.
