Power cuts loom for Dihlabeng

Power cuts loom for Dihlabeng | News Article

Residents and businesses in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality in the Free State might have to brace themselves for blackouts. This, as Eskom threatens to interrupt power supply to the municipality due to non-payment.

This financially troubled municipality owes water boards and Eskom millions. It is over R190 million indebted to Eskom. It made national headlines when its executive mayor, Lindiwe Makhalema, called President Cyril Ramaphosa a “sellout” on a Facebook post. Eskom’s Stefanie Jansen van Rensburg in a statement says the municipality’s escalating debt and failure to adhere to the terms of their debt repayment plan has left the power utility with no other option but to reinstitute supply interruptions.

The power utility has informed the municipality of plans to interrupt power supply as of October the 3rd, should they not make any payments before then.

Meanwhile, the embattled mayor who has recently returned to office following her suspension still faces criticism from opposition parties in council.

DA councillor in the municipality, Eric Motloung, previously told OFM News that Makhalema’s redeployment will do nothing but worsen the state of the municipality and demand that she vacates office.

The municipality is yet to respond to OFM News’ inquiries.
