Ventersdorp unrest dies down following protesters release from jail─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 11:24 Sat, 13 Oct 2018
The North West town of Ventersdorp has normalised somewhat with traffic flowing freely between Ventersdorp and other places this weekend.
Chairperson of the Road Incident Management System in the Kenneth Kaunda District, Vusi Mohlakore, tells OFM News traffic is flowing normally on the N14, despite the presence of barricades in the form of rocks which he says are currently being cleared by officials on site.
Mohlakore adds that authorities did expect that the unrest would die down over the weekend, due to the closure of municipal offices and other government departments.
OFM News reported previously that the eleven people who were arrested for public violence on Wednesday, October 10, were released out on bail of five hundred rand each. They are set to reappear before the local Magistrate’s Court on November 12.
This while schools and business in the troubled area remain shut. Protestors took to the streets this week over service delivery concerns.
Potchefstroom, which previously fell under Tlokwe Local Municipality and Ventersdorp were amalgamated last year, forming the JB Marks Municipality. Since then, unrest and complaints have flared up, with residents saying the amalgamation was not a good idea.
