Residents of the Free State who have been complaining about the provincial government’s housing projects got little joy when Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, released her report on issues affecting the delivery of RDP houses.

The advisory report - dealing with complaints about the delivery of houses across the country – comes more than four years after complaints were lodged countrywide. In the Free State, only two major complaints are being dealt with in the report.

OFM News' Cathy Dlodlo reports that the report does not include more recent problems experienced by home-owners.

The report includes a complaint by 250 residents of the Mangaung Metro Municipality who were moved from old hostels to one-room shacks in anticipation of a housing project that was already approved. But the project never materialised, resulting in these families living in these shacks for more than 18 years.

No specific finding was made, but the report states that government should through happy letters keep beneficiaries in the loop with projects. She further states that because of the time lapse since the investigation, she list remedial actions that would address most problems with government housing projects.
