#WelkomCrime: Parking lot murder suspects in court | News Article

The four suspects arrested in the murder of Shai Mohapi in Welkom, who’s brutal shooting by two men in a parking lot this weekend was captured on CCTV footage, are set to appear in the Welkom Magistrate's court this Friday.

This is according to police spokesperson in the Free State, Sam Makhele, who confirmed the latest arrest yesterday to OFM News but would not provide more information about the latest suspect.

The four face charges of murder and being in possession of an illegal firearm, that is believed to have been used in the murder.  The video of the cold-blooded killing has been circulating on social media, showing how Mohapi was shot and killed in his vehicle during what appears to be a hijacking.

In the video, two men are seen casually strolling up to his vehicle, parked in an almost-empty parking area at the Commando Shopping Complex.

OFM News earlier reported that the first three suspects, believed to be Lesotho Nationals, were arrested on Wednesday, and a firearm, believed to be the murder weapon, was confiscated from the three men. The deceased was reportedly waiting in the car while his wife was busy in the shopping centre. The victim was approached by two unknown armed men who shot him point blank and pulled his body out from the vehicle before fleeing in his blue VW Polo. The victim died at the scene and his vehicle was later discovered abandoned in Steyn street in Welkom.

Meanwhile, information has emerged that the Welkom man who was fatally shot in a shopping mall parking lot in Welkom was a top mining official in the city. This is according to a statement issued by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources, which revealed that the victim, Shai Mohapi, was the Chief Safety Officer at the Sibanye-Stillwater Mine in Welkom in the Free State. Chairperson of the Committee, Sahlulele Luzipo, called the police in the area and province to double their efforts in their quest to root out criminality in the mining sector in that area.
