Sixteen in #Koffiefontein court for public violence

Sixteen in #Koffiefontein court for public violence | News Article

Sixteen of the hundred suspects that were arrested earlier this year for their part in violent protests in Koffiefontein, in the Free State, appeared at the Local Magistrate's Court last week.

This comes after OFM had earlier reported that the group was set to appear at the court on Wednesday, following their last appearance in late October.

It remains unknown what happened to the remainder of the group of suspects that were also among those arrested. The group that appeared in court on Wednesday will make their next court appearance on 16 January next year as the case was postponed for further investigation. The suspects are accused of public violence and arson as it is alleged they damaged public property.

Meanwhile,  OFM News caught up with one of the suspects who's name is known to OFM News, who said he was detained in a prison in Kimberley for close to three months following his initial arrest. The man alleges that on the day of his arrest there were no incidents of arson or public violence and still to this day he does not understand why he and others were arrested.

He has since been released on R500 bail and says he now and then relies on informal work for income which he says is not guaranteed around here. He anticipates that it will only get worse now with his public violence criminal record.
