UPDATE: Dan Pienaar residents may spend tonight with no electricity | News Article

Residents of the Dan Pienaar suburb in northern Bloemfontein can breathe a sigh of relief after local power utility, Centlec, announced that it has resolved issues with its transformer in the area.

The electrical issue has now been restored. This comes after the utility had earlier said that these residents may not be able to use their electricity this evening as Centlec continues to work on a faulty transformer in the area.

According to the Mangaung Metro, the Free State-based power utility’s spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, this was owing to the repairs on the transmitter, which were prolonged by the heavy rains, otherwise, the issue may have been solved in half the time.

Mamatu had earlier said locals in the suburb may spend the whole of this evening as well as Saturday morning with no electricity as technicians work overtime to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, he is confident that the rest of the city may for the rest of the evening, not experience any power failures, as he says the situation remains calm.

Earlier today, giant power utility, Eskom, also stated that it was not likely to implement load-shedding today as it had noted an improvement in how generators were performing as well as the replenishment of water and diesel reserves.

However, it warned that owing to wet weather conditions, the power system remains “tight and vulnerable”, the power utility may be required to implement power cuts at a moment’s notice.

“This could include a significant loss in generating plant due to unplanned technical breakdowns. Although Eskom has rain readiness plans in place with regards to managing the risk of wet coal, the recent heavy rains could also impact coal handling and feeding to the boilers with a potential impact on generation production,” Eskom concluded in a statement.
