The Mangaung metro municipality says calm has returned to Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu outside Bloemfontein where foreign nationals were forced from their businesses by local residents two weeks ago.
Municipal spokesperson Qondile Khedama says, after a meeting Wednesday, all stakeholders agreed to halt the xenophobic attacks and looting of shops. He says it was also agreed that police will continue to monitor the situation.
Foreign business owners were attacked and their shops looted when local vendors were removed from shacks occupied near the Botshabelo shopping complex. Foreigners were then accommodated at Botshabelo’s section H hall and at Thaba Nchu’s Mmabana centre for their safety.
