The Mangaung String Programme recently made their return to the stage with a bang. Mid-Morning Magic’s Yolanda Maartens chats to director of MSP, Eriel Huang to find out more about the programme and what her goals are for the learners and MSP.

The Mangaung Strings Programme is a string music development programme initiated by the Free State Musicon in July 1998 under the directorship of Peter Guy. There are currently 250+ students who come from all over Mangaung, Lejweleputswa and Fezile Dabi districts.

The Bochabela String Orchestra is the flagship ensemble of the MSP, and has performed for government, corporate and community functions - sharing classical, traditional and African music with local and international audiences most teaching staff are graduates of the MSP. Many of thier alumni have pursued further studies abroad, and others plav in professional orchestras in South Africa.

Eriel Huang took over in April 2022 as MP's new Artistic Director with the mission of building bridges and serving communities through music, and raising collective local leadership of the next generation
