Cape Town firefighters dealing with 14 vegetation fires─── 16:34 Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Cape Town - Firefighters were dealing with 14 vegetation fires across Cape Town on Monday afternoon, the city's fire and rescue services said.
"None of these fires are threatening property at the moment," said spokesman Theo Lane.
The largest blazes were in Steenberg, Strandfontein and Atlantis.
In Steenberg, an extensive area of blazing vegetation was causing a smoke hazard to motorists on Allenby Drive.
Lane said 35 firefighters were on the scene.
Eight firefighting vehicles had been assigned to the blaze in Dennegeur Avenue in Strandfontein and five to Dassenberg Farm in the Atlantis area.
Strong winds were hampering extinguishing efforts.
The cause of the fires was unknown but Lane said human intervention was common.
