Housing cutbacks mooted, but unlikely: IRR | News Article

Bloemfontein - Government expenditure on housing has grown faster than any other budget item since 1999 and its plans to cut back on housing will be political suicide.

This is according to the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), who says housing and community issues currently constitute over 11% of total government spending.

Spokesperson Mienke Steytler says it is unlikely that this will be cut since the rising level of protest action is often as a result of dissatisfaction over housing provision.

In its report, the IRR states that President Jacob Zuma has rebuked South Africans twice in six months for waiting for the State to provide them with housing.

His comments link to those of Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu who said that people under 40 years of age had lost nothing to apartheid and would not get houses.
