IRR wades into debate on Rhodes statue─── 09:32 Sat, 11 Apr 2015

Bloemfontein - The South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has waded intot the debate about the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at the University of Cape Town's upper campus.
The IRR expressed concern about how quickly a tide of intimidation was able to overcome the liberal culture of open academic discourse, and what this means for the future of our academic institutions.
The statue was removed on Thursday after nearly a month of protests.
IRR spokesperson Mienke Steytler says the debate should not only be focused on the Rhodes statue but colonial monuments and symbols all over the country.
