Johannesburg – No date has been set for a meeting between Chris Hani's daughter, Lindiwe, and her father's killer, Janusz Walus.

Walus's lawyer, Julian Knight, confirmed to News24 that he was facilitating a meeting between Lindiwe and his client, but said he was still waiting for the correctional services department to make arrangements.

"I am attempting a meeting between the two. I have sent a letter attempting to sort out a meeting and I am waiting for correctional services to make an arrangement," he said.

Knight said he could not go into further details of the planned meeting. The request for the meeting came from Lindiwe.

"I can't say much. All I can say is that she called me requesting to meet with my client. I cannot be drawn into this matter," he said.

Correctional services spokesperson, Manelisi Wolela, told News24 there was no meeting arranged by his department. He said they were not aware of any request by Knight or the Hani family to meet with Walus. "We are not aware of the meeting," Wolela told News24.

SA Communist Party's national spokesperson, Alex Mashilo, said the party and the Hani family fully supported Lindiwe on her desire to meet with her father's killer. "Lindiwe has the support of her mom [Limpho] and the SACP. Like all of us, she wants to know the truth. We all seek closure... We communicated with her mom and our legal team and we decided the step she is taking is the best," Mashilo said.

Mashilo said Limpho was not planning to attend the meeting. "She made it clear that all she wants to know is the truth. Walus had written a letter apologising but he is not prepared to make full disclosure." She will only meet him when he is prepared to share the truth," he said.

Walus was granted parole by the High Court in Pretoria last week Thursday. Several political parties have spoken out against the decision. In May last year, Clive Derby-Lewis, who provided the gun which was used to kill Hani outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg, in 1993, was granted medical parole.

After an extensive court battle, Judge Selby Baqwa ruled that Derby-Lewis's medical parole was immediately effective, saying the former Conservative Party leader had shown remorse.
