SAHRC speaks against sexual violence in schools | News Article

The South African Human Rights Commission will work closely with the Department of Basic Education after recent sexual assault reports in schools.

The Commission says it is extremely shocked by the recent allegations of sexual violence directed against children in schools across the country. This comes amidst investigations relating to 87 primary school children who were allegedly sexually violated by a 57-year-old school patroller in Gauteng. The Free State Department of Education has also weighed in on the matter saying the safety of learners has become a national crisis. The Provincial Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has told OFM News that the province is working around the clock to prevent such acts from taking place at schools in the province.

The Human Rights Commission says it is engaging the Commission for Gender Equality and other stakeholders to ensure that a safe learning environment is created for learners at school and in communities where they live.
