Minister Malusi Gigaba said the process of moving to electronic started in 2010 and is part of the department's measures to fight long queues. This will also include the printing of details of parents or guardians on children's passports.

Gigaba says due to the systems upgrade services at all 184 offices excluding large offices for ID’s and passports will be interrupted at different times in each province for a week beginning tomorrow (Friday). Gauteng will experience no system interruptions as upgrades will be on weekends.
