SA rescue team arrives in Japan─── 09:08 Sat, 19 Mar 2011

Members of a South African search and rescue mission that arrived in Japan yesterday are hopeful they will rescue trapped survivors in the sunken coastal town of Ishimonaki. Samantha Botsis, the local coordinator of Rescue SA, said the 46-member team of emergency response specialists and media, split up, with some making the six-hour journey to Ishimonaki from Tokyo, while another group waited for Rescue SA’s 12 tons of equipment, including boats, cameras and food supplies, to clear customs. Around 10 000 people are believed to be missing in Ishimonaki, which is still battered by after-shocks, and has no supplies of food or clean water.
