Josiah Thugwane became the first Black South African athlete to win an Olympic gold medal during the Atlanta Marathon on August 4 1996.
The Bethal born runner first broke into the international scene the year prior when he won gold at the Honolulu Marathon.
He ran his face marathon in 1991.
