Maize slightly up in latest CEC release─── SABRINA DEAN 18:01 Fri, 27 May 2016

Bloemfontein - The Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) has revised its estimate of the commercial maize crop slightly upwards with its fifth summer crop production estimate.
The CEC has set the maize estimate at 7,161 million tons, which is just over 1,5% higher than previously.
Also worth taking note is that the estimate for maize in Free State and North West is based on a scientific and objective results provided by the Agricultural Research Council’s National Crop Statistics Consortium (NCSC). The Committee has found that conditions appear better than expected in certain parts, with irrigation plantings also higher in certain provinces.
Other positive factors include late summer rains, warm autumn temperatures and the fact that heavy frosts have not yet occurred in important areas.
In other crops, Sunflower and soya estimates are up nearly 2% and 5%, while estimates for sorghum and dry beans remain unchanged. The ground nut estimate is down nearly 3%.
