Mahikeng reared entrepreneur makes top 200 young Saffers list─── 14:00 Thu, 14 Jul 2016
A young woman entrepreneur who grew up in a rural village near Mahikeng has been ranked among the Mail and Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans.
Farmer’s Weekly reports that Leeko Mokoena founded a company called Made with Rural to help small-scale farmers to access markets through group buying and selling.
She says as a child, she saw how every household had a food garden or communal crop field which guaranteed food security for many families. However, this started to change as younger generations no longer wanted to farm the land.
Mokoena told Farmer’s Weekly she believes that seeing evidence of new and successful farming businesses throughout the value chain will encourage more young people to work in the sector.
Her company has also established a mobile app, Go Rural, that enables producers to access industry information and track sales.
