Agri podcast: World Food Day commemorated tomorrow─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 11:46 Tue, 15 Oct 2019
World Food Day is commemorated tomorrow across the globe.
Chief Economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz), Wandile Sihlobo, says in the light of this commemoration it is good to review South Africa’s position on the food security ladder. According to him, the Economist Global Food Security Index shows South Africa was ranked the 45th most food-secure country out of 133 countries in 2018. He says this is relatively good, compared to the rankings of some other BRICS countries. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are the five major emerging national economies. Sihlobo says it is reassuring that South Africa still manages to punch above its weight in terms of food security, despite the country's relatively lower average income. He says this is a testament to South Africa's competitive agricultural sector, and its ability to supply food at a relatively low cost.
Maize meal is the most widely grown crop in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for 40% of the continent’s production and 0.3% of global maize production in 2017. This is according to the global market research company Euromonitor International, which issued a new report about maize meal. The report shows maize meal is a staple food for about 50% of the population in Sub-Sahara Africa. South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Egypt are the largest producers.

The agricultural businesses OVK and Suidwes have started with negotiations which will materially affect the values of the respective companies' shares. OVK made the joint priority announcement on its Facebook page stating the shareholders of the respective companies are advised to trade cautiously with the shares of both companies until a further announcement is made or if the cautionary announcement is withdrawn.
