Several young community service doctors and interns in the Free State are unable to work because they have not been registered by the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

According to a statement on the Democratic Alliance's (DA) website, the party has written to the Free State MEC of Health, Montseng Tsiu, requesting that these doctors be registered as a matter of urgency considering the nationwide pandemic.

DA spokesperson, Mariëtte Pittaway, tells OFM News that many qualified nurses and healthcare workers are unemployed while frontline health professionals suffer as they work tirelessly to curb the virus. Furthermore, Pittaway emphases that the Free State is losing the war against Covid-19. And this is due to the provincial government’s failure to prepare for the pandemic.

Pittaway mentions that a number of nurses and healthcare professionals who are qualified have not been employed by the government. The Free State is experiencing a devastating second Covid-19 wave that calls on individuals and organisations to be proactive in implementing measures to rein the spread of the virus, says Pittaway. She concludes by emphasising that young healthcare professionals are eager to assist and ease the load that the pandemic has placed on the healthcare system.
