Agri News Podcast: Expropriation bill in Parliament | News Article

Free State Agriculture is taking part in oral submissions regarding the Expropriation bill in Parliament on Wednesday, 24 March.

Jack Armour, commercial manager at Free State Agriculture, says the organisation will be amongst various individuals and organisations who will be voicing their concerns regarding the bill. He says Free State Agriculture will explain to the members of parliament why the two houses, Parliament and the National Council of Provinces, must vote - with a large majority - against the bill to avoid a poverty crisis in the country. The organisation is opposing any legislation that may have a negative impact on any form of property right or expropriation without compensation of any form of private property. Armour adds that the Expropriation bill diminishes and threatens property rights.

Wandile Sihlobo, chief economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, looked at growing agriculture export opportunities for South Africa within the BRICS countries,  and says in aid of this, they held a hybrid session, with the  primary focus of exploring how South Africa's agriculture and agribusiness sectors could gain more traction within BRICS. He says this theme is premised on the observation that South Africa's agriculture is expanding and is ripe to contest more international markets. In the next few years, the sector could enjoy a growth spurt, especially if the support by government policies, including the master plan on agriculture and agro-processing, come into play. He adds that, notably, the long-term projections from Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy also present an optimistic picture of South Africa's agricultural output growth.
