Agri podcast: NW Agriculture Department celebrating Women's Month | News Article

The North West Department of Agriculture is planning a range of upcoming events as they celebrate Women’s Month this August.

Speaking to the MEC of the North West Department of Agriculture, Desbo Mohono, she tells OFM News that her department will donate ten more bulls to emerging female farmers across the North West province for Women’s Month. She says that the donation will aid in the improvement of the quality of their livestock, following the recent distribution of bulls in the province to young farmers through the department’s subsidy scheme. She adds that this month will see many more plans, initiatives and schemes put into place to assist female farmers in as many facets of farming as possible. Mohono adds that giving these bulls to women is yet another demonstration that the government is committed to empowering emerging female farmers to reach their highest potential.

South Africa has recorded an agricultural trade surplus of US$1,5 billion in the second quarter of 2021, which is up 40% year-on-year. Wandile Sihlobo, chief economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz), says that South Africa's agricultural sector is export-orientated and that nearly half of the annual produce, in value terms, is exported in regular and good seasons. The 2020/21 season has been one such season, producing the second consecutive strong output performance, with an even larger harvest for major field crops, horticulture and the wine industry than in 2019/20. Sihlobo says that this robust production could boost exports to surpass the 2020 level of US$10,2 billion.
