Mieliediefstal is ‘n seisoenale misdaad.
Farmers are being urged to brand mark their animals to make identifying them easier in stock theft cases. This call by the Provincial Commissioner of North West, Sello Kwena, comes as a 41-year-old woman and her husband is facing a charge of stock theft and is expected to reappear in the Atamelang Magistrate's Court next week. Police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says the accused were arrested in connection with a stock theft incident reported in May last year. That was after the complainant reported that 11 of his cattle were stolen from his farm in the vicinity of Atamelang. Shortly after the incident, cattle fitting the complainant's description were found at a cattle post at Geysdorp with altered brand marks. The cattle were impounded for further investigations.

The Free State Government intends to spend R279 million on existing infrastructure earmarked for the rehabilitation and upgrading of roads during the 2022/23 financial year. This is according to the MEC of Finance, Gadija Brown, during her budget speech last week. Her announcement comes as agricultural unions and the broader public have called on the government to fix critical road infrastructure in the province, especially after continuous heavy rainfall these past few months. Brown stated that road infrastructure is critical to economic growth, and noted that the Free State’s core competitive advantage is its central position as the distribution and logistics sector flow through various roads throughout this province.
