The operations officer of the Red Meat Producers' Organization in the Northern Cape, Julize Volschenk, says 14 positive cases of sheep scab, also known as brandsiekte, are currently being managed in the province, and that the relevant farms have been placed under quarantine. OFM News' Heidre Malgas reports Volschenk says this is to make sure that the necessary treatment and monitoring of the affected animals and farms take place. Volschenk further warns that if the disease spreads further and starts to affect more farms, it could have a detrimental effect on the agricultural sector.

The Crop Estimates Committee’s lifted its forecast for South Africa's 2021/22 maize production by 2% from July to 15 million tonnes. About 7.6 million tonnes are white maize, and 7.4 million tonnes are yellow maize. Wandile Sihlobo, the chief economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, says that the harvest of 15 million tonnes is down by 8% from the 2020/21 season, but it is still well above the 10-year average maize harvest of 12.8 million tonnes. Furthermore, Sihlobo says another significant, and most welcome adjustment in the data, was the 1% increase in South Africa's soybeans harvest from July, estimated to a new record of 2,2 million tonnes.
