International Potato Day highlights role in food security─── ISABEL VAN TONDER 05:00 Fri, 29 May 2026
This year, International Day of the Potato will be on 29 May with the theme Where potatoes grow, livelihoods flourish.
Potatoes rank amongst the five primary food crops globally, playing a significant role in food security and job creation. South Africa is one of the largest potato producers in Africa.
An average cultivation of approximately 51,844 hectares over the past five years resulted in a yield exceeding 107-million 10kg bags sold in South African fresh produce markets.
Local consumption is growing, which is encouraging, with an average per capita potato consumption reaching 39.9kg, nearing Potatoes SA’s target of 40kg per person.

One of the organisation’s key objectives is to grow local potato consumption, and it will continue to implement strategic marketing, consumer education, and industry initiatives to drive demand and ensure sustained growth in the years ahead.
The average weekly price of potatoes during the first 13 weeks of 2026 at South Africa’s fresh produce markets showed a week-on-week increase of 25%. Across all markets, potato classes, and sizes, the average price was R51,56 per 10kg bag.
Similar to last year, Potatoes SA is set to commemorate International Day of the Potato by hosting Fresh Produce Market days and the events will focus on the significance of potatoes, showcasing their nutritional advantages.
Potatoes SA is collaborating with various industry stakeholders and several potato seed suppliers to highlight various cultivars, demonstrate the numerous advantages of potatoes, and present optimal methods for enjoying them.
