The Mercedes driver converted pole position into his third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but what initially looked like a comfortable afternoon quickly turned into a fight for survival around the unforgiving Baku City Circuit.

Russell controlled the opening stages and built a healthy advantage at the front, while behind him the battle for the podium began to take shape. Verstappen, who started only eighth, worked his way through the field and eventually moved into second place after the first Safety Car restart.

The race was then thrown wide open when Williams’ Alex Albon crashed at Turn 6 on lap 29, bringing out the Safety Car and bunching the field together.

Russell handled the restart well, but the drama was far from over.

A second Safety Car followed after Franco Colapinto lost control of his Alpine and collected teammate Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris. The incident ended the afternoon for all three drivers and left the closing stages poised for a grandstand finish.

With the field congested, Verstappen was suddenly right on Russell’s tail.

The Dutchman piled on the pressure during the final laps, but Russell refused to crack. The Mercedes driver crossed the line just 0.196 seconds ahead of Verstappen to seal a memorable victory in one of Formula 1’s most spectacular settings.

Isack Hadjar completed the Red Bull podium, finishing third after making a welcome return from injury. Charles Leclerc brought his Ferrari home fourth, while Kimi Antonelli produced one of the drives of the day to climb from 16th on the grid to fifth.

Lewis Hamilton finished sixth, with Arvid Lindblad seventh and Esteban Ocon eighth. Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz completed the top ten.

For McLaren, however, Baku was a day to forget. Oscar Piastri, who had been running strongly in the early stages, eventually slipped to 14th after a late error, while Norris retired following the second Safety Car incident.

The chaotic race also saw Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Albon, Colapinto, Gasly and Norris fail to finish.

Russell’s victory also carries significance in the championship battle. The Mercedes driver reduced Antonelli’s advantage at the top of the standings from 81 points to 66, with the Italian salvaging valuable points despite his difficult qualifying session.

The drivers and teams now heat to the Middle East for the Bahrain Grand Prix which will take place at the Sepang Circuit from Friday to Sunday.
