South African pop music icon Kurt Darren presented the Springboks with their match jerseys in Brisbane today.

The Boks play Australia in a Vodacom Tri-Nations clash at the Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.

Darren described handing out the jerseys as a “massive honour”, saying it compared to his singing on Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday at Hyde Park in London.

“I am a huge rugby fan,” he said.

“Music and rugby reflect the psyche of the South African population. If the Springboks win everybody is happy and you guys play such a big role in that.”

The singer, who has been performing in Brisbane and will later travel to Perth for more concert appearances, shared some life experiences with the squad.

“The music industry is tough and I know what it is like to go through tough time. But I also believe you have to do that to appreciate what you have. I also had fun on my way to achieving my first hit and further success but I would never want to go back there. It is also a major challenge to stay successful.

“In a sporting context you guys have all been there. It is great to play for your Province but the ultimate is to play for the Boks,” he said, wishing the team well for the Test match.

Darren added that he had been inspired by the Boks to write a new song and gave them a sneak preview of the opening verse, which was greeted with applause. - sarugby.co.za
