The Currie Cup could be the solution for the problem that SA Rugby and the Toyota Cheetahs are facing with regard to the Super Rugby and Guinness PRO14.

In a world of uncertainty, the Cheetahs could be shown the door from the PRO14 if New Zealand Rugby gets their way and South African teams leave Super Rugby.

While Cheetahs management is working on the solution with the various role-players, Free State Rugby managing director Harold Verster told OFM Sport that defending Currie Cup champions will do the talking on the field again.

“They always say that the proof of the pudding is in the eating of the pudding.

“The Cheetahs will always prove to the people that we fight back and punch above our weight.

“We always surprise the others. People never thought that we would win the Currie Cup in the past number of years, and we did it with four wins and a draw.

“A few of the other unions with all of their money and names have been able to achieve that.

“Look at the squad which we have assembled. We have Ruan Pienaar at scrumhalf, Tian Schoeman at flyhalf. The centres are guys like Frans Steyn and Howard Mnisi, Benhard Janse van Rensburg and William Small-Smith. On the wing, there are players like Rosko Specman and Craig Barry.

“It’s a fantastic team that we’ve got ready for the Currie Cup, and we are looking forward to that.

“We will prove ourselves on the field again and I think that we will be in a good spot going forward after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We will not just sit back and accept that there is nothing for us. That is not how we approach it, there will be something special. I can’t promise, but I am confident.”

A double-round Currie Cup is set to start within the next month if rugby gets the green-light from the government.

OFM Sport also understands that a major beer brand has come on board as the sponsor of the Currie Cup.
