George Lourens - Morgan Piek

“He played his 100th game for the Cheetahs and hadn't played since. He knows the work-ons that he needs and to me a loose-forward has got to be physical and he showed that. He was really physical on the defence and he has some good ball-carries.”

The Toyota Cheetahs will have some selection headaches ahead of their upcoming tour to Australia for their two games against the Western Force in Perth.

It was the George Lourens and Oupa Mohoje show in Bloemfontein on Saturday and they used the opportunity to afforded to them.

On Saturday a Cheetahs team loaded with fringe players fought back from 12-0 down after 13 minutes to beat the Force 29-12 in the second game of the Toyota Challenge.

The win means the Cheetahs have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series before the two away games in Western Australia.

The Springbok flanker Mohoje as well as the flyhalf, Lourens, were simply outstanding and they certainly put their name in the hat for the tour.

Mohoje put some big hits during the game, while Lourens, made a mistake or two and he should rather leave long-distance drop goals for the now retired Frans Steyn. Other than that, Lourens, played to the potential which saw him being named as the Player of the Year in the 2022 Varsity Cup.

The Cheetahs assistant coach, Charl Strydom, told OFM Sport that Mohoje and Lourens showed their worth.

“Especially for Oupa, I'm really happy for him,” said Strydom.

“He played his 100th game for the Cheetahs and hadn't played since. He knows the work-ons that he needs and to me a loose-forward has got to be physical and he showed that. He was really physical on the defence and he has some good ball-carries.

“George as well, like you said we know the ability that he has. It's a bit of a step-up with the pressure that you have in these games. He made one or two errors, but overall, I think he has a really good game.”

The Cheetahs will face the Force in Perth on the 29 September in the first of two games in Perth.
