Brits reunites with Hawies at Boland ahead of Currie Cup─── MORGAN PIEK 07:47 Fri, 06 Jun 2025

Springbok Sevens star David Brits is set to make his Boland Cavaliers debut against the Toyota Cheetahs next month.
The former Cheetahs centre and Maties captain will start training with the Cavaliers on Monday, where he’ll reunite with coach Hawies Fourie. Brits captained the University of Stellenbosch side under Fourie, who later brought him to Bloemfontein during his time at the helm of the Cheetahs.
This move will see Brits turning out for a third Currie Cup side in as many seasons. Last year, the Blitzbok represented the Pumas in Nelspruit, with his final game in the competition being a semi-final decider against the Cheetahs. The Bloemfontein outfit won that encounter 41–14 in the Lowveld.

Speaking to OFM Sport after a final hunting trip before returning to the field, Brits said he’s excited about the prospect of making his debut against his former team, adding that the situation comes with a touch of irony and history.
“I think the guys at Boland have done really well to qualify, and coach Hawies has done a fantastic job with them too. Hats off to everyone involved – I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait,” said the Selborne College old boy from East London.
“When Hawies called, I had a feeling this might happen. He’s been at Boland for the past year or two, and I’ve always wanted to be coached by him again. From Varsity Cup to the Cheetahs, I’ve learnt so much from him. He’s not just a brilliant coach but a great person as well.”
“I’m looking forward to giving it my all – for him and the boys at Boland. They play an exciting brand of rugby, and you can see the system Hawies has implemented is working well. I’ll do my best for the team.”
Brits is also grateful for the opportunity to keep playing professional rugby.
“I’m joining them on Monday – it’s going to be exciting. There’ll obviously be a few challenges along the way, but I’m just grateful to still be at home and have the chance to play. At the end of the day, all you want to do is play rugby.”

Though Brits will always carry a bit of Cheetah pride, he’s relishing the chance to face his old teammates – and admits there’s a sense of unfinished business.
“Yeah, it’s a bit ironic – last year, the Cheetahs knocked me out of the Currie Cup while I was with the Pumas, and this year, my first 15s game is against them. It’s funny how it’s worked out.”
“There’s a lot in the mix – with Hawies having coached there as well. I suppose it makes for a great story, and I’m thankful to experience this in my career. It’s part of the game – facing adversity and challenges – and I’m ready for it. I can’t wait.”

Another former Cheetah, who could potentially debut for the Cavaliers against the Free State, is the tighthead prop Laurence Victor.
The Boland Cavaliers will host the Toyota Cheetahs in Wellington on 27 July in the opening round of the Currie Cup. The Cavaliers claimed a 45–29 victory over the Cheetahs during round one of the SA Cup earlier this year.
