Munster are the first team to advance to the semi-finals of the United Rugby Championship after beating a strong Ospreys side 23 – 7 at Thomond Park on Friday evening.
The retiring back Simon Zebo scored the opening try, with Jack Crowley landing the tough conversion to give Munster an early 7 – 0 lead. Ospreys were briefly on level terms after winger Keelan Giles' try and Owen Williams converting.
Munster hooker Niall Scannell scored the team’s second try and another conversion by Crowley put them in the lead by 14 – 7. A penalty for Munster close to the Osprey’s line saw Crowley extend their lead to 17 – 7, which they protected until half-time.
The second half did not see much in terms of scoring, with relentless pressure by Munster resulting in two more penalties against Ospreys. Crowley packed his kicking boots and was successful with both penalties, securing the win for his team.
After the match, Munster coach Graham Rowntree told the BBC that although far from perfect, the job was done
"Elements of our attack were good but they held us out so we had to keep our composure, we kicked really well in the second half and took the points when we could. It was nothing glamourous but that's knockout rugby."
Munster will host a semi-final on 15 June against either Glasgow or the Stomers, who meet on Saturday night. The was the 10th successive win for Munster, matching their run of wins when they lifted the trophy in 2011.
