Deon Fourie - Morgan Piek

Long-serving and ever-reliable Stormers utility forward Deon Fourie has signed a one-year contract extension, which will see him available from the start of next season.

Renowned for his tireless work rate, Fourie has made 132 appearances for the Stormers–placing him fourth on the franchise‘s all–time caps list, behind Steven Kitshoff (138), Frans Malherbe (152), and Brok Harris (170).

The seasoned flanker recently suffered a fractured leg during the United Rugby Championship victory over Connacht. However, he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the new season and is set to return to his usual role on the side of the scrum. Stormers Director of Rugby, John Dobson, lauded Fourie’s toughness and attitude, saying his response to the setback is typical of the man.

“Deon is a true warrior. His leadership and presence on the field remain a massive asset to us. He’s been an incredible contributor to this team, and we know he’ll bring his trademark intensity when he returns” Dobson said. Although disappointed to miss the closing stages of the current campaign, Fourie remains positive and focused on his recovery.

“Injuries are part of the game, and thankfully this one isn’t too serious. I’ll be backing the boys through the playoffs and putting in the work on my rehab so I can come back strong next season” said Fourie.

Now Fourie (38) made his debut for Western Province back in 2006 and for the Stormers in 2008. He then spent seven years in France, where he racked up close to 150 appearances for Lyon and Grenoble before returning to Cape Town.

In 2022, he made his long–awaited Springbok debut at the age of 35, running out against Wales in Bloemfontein. That appearance made him one of the oldest–if not the oldest–Bok debutants in history.
