New Toyota Cheetahs tighthead prop, John Kelly Okonkwo, is eager to make his mark and seize the opportunity that lies ahead in Bloemfontein.

Okonkwo was in attendance at the Cheetahs’ captain’s run on Friday ahead of their crucial SA Cup clash against the Border Bulldogs. There, he got a first-hand look at what is largely the team’s first-choice line-up as they completed their final preparations.

The powerful front-rower previously spent time with the Lions, and in the Varsity Cup, he represented Wits for one season before going on to play two seasons for the UCT Ikey Tigers. He started at tighthead prop in the 2024 Varsity Cup final against the UFS Shimlas in Bloemfontein.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Okonkwo said this is a massive opportunity for him – one he intends to grab with both hands, something he’s become accustomed to throughout his rugby journey.

“Looking back, I came from a school (St David’s) that’s not really known for its rugby. So every opportunity I’ve had, I’ve grabbed with both hands and left the rest to God,” said Okonkwo.

“I’ve played for Wits, the Lions, and most recently UCT, and I’ve always taken pride in the set piece and being dominant up front. Joining the Cheetahs, I know the standard is high – I’ve watched the games – and I’m excited about the chance to show what I can offer.

“Opportunities like these don’t come around often, so I’m grateful. I’ll give it everything, and once again, I’m trusting God with the journey ahead.”

Okonkwo also expressed his excitement about being part of a new generation of players breaking through.

“It’s exciting to see a new wave coming in – guys I’ve played with and against, all around my age. You know what they’re capable of, and that chemistry really adds something extra. When games go down to the wire, that connection gives you an extra 5%. So yes, I’m really excited for the season.”

Meanwhile, experienced tighthead Robert Hunt is set to leave the Cheetahs after the SA Cup, as he heads to Newport in Wales to join the Dragons. Hunt has been a standout performer since joining the Cheetahs just over a year ago. While his presence will be missed, his departure creates opportunities for emerging players like Okonkwo to step up.

In recent weeks, the Cheetahs have further bolstered their squad with the signings of winger Ntokozo Makhaza from UCT, prop Tielman Nieuwoudt from the Bulls, and flanker Sasko Ndlovu – a former Junior Springboks captain – from UJ.
