The Toyota Cheetahs may be forced to throw the exciting winger Ntokozo Makhaza into the deep end when they face the Suzuki Griquas on Friday in Bultfontein.

The fleet-footed Michael Annies is sidelined with a Lisfranc fracture in his foot, ruling him out for the start of the Currie Cup. He is currently in a moonboot, and the nature of the injury means he could be out for anything between six and twelve weeks.

Although the Cheetahs have good depth on the wing, Annies’ absence is a big blow –he’s a player who oozes X-factor.

Makhaza, a two-time Varsity Cup Player of the Year, signed with the Cheetahs following the conclusion of the 2025 tournament, where his team, the University of Cape Town Ikeys, were crowned champions.

However, the talented speedster has no experience at the senior provincial level. Last month, he told OFM Sport that his first goal is to establish himself at the Cheetahs and earn a starting jersey.

Makhaza, who recently spent time with the Springboks, arrived in Bloemfontein on Saturday, along with loose forward and former Junior Springbok captain Sasko Ndlovu.

Cheetahs coach Frans Steyn told OFM Sport that although Annies’ injury is a setback, they’re excited to have Makhaza in the squad. He added that there are other players, such as the experienced Clayton Blommetjies, who they can also turn to.

“Definitely, and looking at where some of the guys are,” said Steyn. “Some of the young players we’re trying to bring in, need to be given opportunities so that we can select a different type of team if needed. So yes, we’re looking forward to next week.

“Ntokozo will be here on Monday, and Clayton Blommetjies is still with us and will be fine. Michael is a big loss for us – he’s a special player – but hey, that’s life. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

There is some good news, though. The versatile Munier Hartzenberg is edging closer to a return from a hamstring injury. The utility back, who can play on the wing or at outside centre, has started running again in training and may be available early in the Currie Cup campaign.

He was set to make his return during the SA Cup, however, days before the match in which he was set to return, he sustained another injury during training.

Friday’s warm-up match between the Cheetahs and Griquas at Carpe Diem Park in Bultfontein kicks off at 13:00.
