Cheetahs find their roar ahead of Currie Cup─── MORGAN PIEK 08:42 Mon, 14 Jul 2025

The Toyota Cheetahs have renewed confidence heading into the Currie Cup, following their historic 24–20 win over Georgia in Bloemfontein on Friday night.
While the Cheetahs’ performance was far from flawless, they managed to snatch a late victory over the international side, courtesy of a try by debutant Ntokozo Makhaza.
The match was especially meaningful for the Cheetahs, as it formed part of their 130th anniversary celebrations. They were determined to make a strong statement before the domestic season kicks off.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the performance was the way the younger, less experienced players stepped up. Makhaza and Banie Britz both impressed, while young props Frankie dos Reis and Ben Pitout held their own against a powerful international front row.
Returning flyhalf Ethan Wentzel also had several good moments as he continues his comeback after six months on the sidelines.
However, it’s important to bear in mind that the Currie Cup presents a very different challenge. The Cheetahs have a tough start, with three testing fixtures on the horizon. They’ll face the Boland Cavaliers (away), the Pumas (home), and the defending champions, the Sharks (home), in their opening rounds.
Friday’s clash was the Cheetahs’ final outing before the Currie Cup. The players will now enjoy a few days of training before taking a short break to recharge.
Cheetahs captain Victor Sekekete told OFM Sport that the win over Georgia was significant and that the team draws confidence from beating an international opponent.
“This win was emotional for us – it brought back so much desire, so much hunger,” said Sekekete.

“We always feel like we’re on the verge. Every time we get close to the top, we lose players. Every time we start building something, something else happens. But we’ve just kept our heads down and worked even harder.
So for us, working hard despite all the setbacks is a huge positive. We’ve focused on ourselves, and I think that’s something we’re doing really well right now.”
The Cheetahs will kick off their Currie Cup campaign on Sunday, 27 July, against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington.
