Bafana Bafana are viewing their first appearance in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 12 years as a major opportunity.

South Africa has assembled a strong squad for the CHAN tournament, which will take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Bloemfontein-born midfielder Neo Maema will captain the team.

In March, Maema captained South Africa for the first time during their 1-1 draw against Egypt in the CHAN qualifier held in his hometown of Bloemfontein.

Maema, who has been linked with a move away from Mamelodi Sundowns, says this tournament is a real chance to make a statement on the international stage. He added that it’s an honour to be handed the leadership responsibility once again.

“First of all, it’s an opportunity and an honour to represent the country,” said Maema.

“I feel like this is a big one because it’s been 12 years since we last took part in this competition.

“We should be excited as a group of players. Personally, I’m proud to lead the team into such a significant tournament. We are honoured and privileged to be in this position.”

Bafana midfielder Keagan Dolly is also raring to go ahead of the upcoming CHAN tournament.

On Tuesday, the seasoned Dolly featured in the 1–1 draw with COSAFA Cup champions Angola in a warm-up match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.

Dolly, currently a free agent and recently linked with a move to Siwelele FC, says CHAN presents a golden opportunity for South Africa to bring home international silverware.

“There’s a lot of excitement, and for many of us, it’s a chance to represent the country again,” said the 32-year-old.

“It’s been 12 years since we last competed in CHAN, so this is a big moment.

“We’re a good mix of youngsters and experienced players. Many of us have been without clubs recently, so this camp is also a great opportunity to come together.

“It’s good to see familiar faces, to enjoy the environment, and to focus on doing something special for the national team.”

Bafana Bafana will kick off their campaign on 8 August against the Desert Foxes of Algeria at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.
