The Bulls and Lions were both victorious in their second round matches in the Currie Cup competition, against the Sharks and Western Province respectively.
In Saturday’s first match, the Lions scored a comprehensive 40-19 win over Western Province in Johannesburg, thereby getting another five log points in a row at the start of their Currie Cup campaign.
The Lions scored five tries and a penalty try against three tries from the Western Province and led 21-12 at halftime.
Lubabalo Dobela, Rabz Maxwane, and WJ Steenkamp all scored tries for the Lions, with skipper Jaco Visagie scoring two for his team. Louw Nel scored twice for Western Province, with Gideon van Wyk also contributing to the scoreline.
Lions flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela, who switched to scrumhalf in the second half, was named Player of the Match.
‘Bulls made a massive statement’
In yesterday’s other Currie Cup match, the Bulls made a massive statement as they smashed the Sharks XV 64-0 in a one-sided game at Loftus Versfeld. The hosts scored ten tries and is now top of the log with ten log points from their first two matches, above the Lions on points difference.
The score was 35-0 at the break, with no end to the horror in sight for the Sharks. Try scorers for the Bulls were Juann Else (2), Dylan Smith, Chris Smit (2), Jeandre Rudolph (2), Stravino Jacobs, Cornel Smit, JJ Theron, while Boeta Chamberlain was successful with seven conversions.
On Friday, the Cheetahs triumphed over the Pumas in the first match of the second round by 42-25, while the Suzuki Griquas and Boland Cavaliers will play the fourth and final match of the second round on Sunday afternoon in Kimberley.
