Big boost for Griquas as Abrahams signs on─── MORGAN PIEK 14:06 Mon, 15 Sep 2025

The Suzuki Griquas have received some very welcome news ahead of the 2025 Currie Cup final against the Lions, which will be played in Johannesburg this weekend.
The in-form scrumhalf Caleb Abrahams has officially signed a two-year contract to continue his career with the Peacock Blues, after being on loan from the Bulls for this year’s Currie Cup.
Abrahams, who hails from Kimberley, joined the Griquas from the Pretoria-based franchise earlier in the season and has made the No 9 jersey his own since his first outing in a warm-up match against the Toyota Cheetahs in Bultfontein.

This is a very big signing for the Griquas, as there are a few other unions and franchises that have taken notice of the young halfback, and it is even believed that the Springboks Sevens teams have expressed their interest in the player’s services.
The former Grey College star told OFM Sport that committing to the Griquas was a “no-brainer”, as the union is both his hometown team and where his heart lies.
“Yes, I'm so happy and excited to stay here, because my heart is here,” said the former SA Schools player.
“I’ll always be grateful to the Griquas staff and Coach Piet (Bergh) for giving me the opportunity. Every time he puts me on the field, he can expect nothing less than my absolute best and 100% effort.”
Abrahams added that Saturday’s final – the Griquas’ first since 2022 – is a massive occasion for him personally and for the team. While he admitted they would have loved to play in front of the “Kwaste” faithful in Kimberley, he stressed that the side would leave no stone unturned when they run out on the Highveld.
“The final is really a massive game for us, for the Griquas and for Kimberley,” Abrahams said.

“I’m just sad it couldn’t be here at home, but we’ll go to Ellis Park and give it our all. We’ll leave our hearts on the field and have no regrets.
“I’m super excited to be part of this final and to experience the atmosphere. I know it’s just another game, but because it’s a final, the pressure and energy are much higher – it’s different.
“So, I really can’t wait. I’m excited to take it all in and to give my best on the field in front of the supporters.”
The Griquas will only announce their team for the final on Wednesday, but it’s hard to imagine coach Pieter Bergh moving away from the winning formula that has served him so well this season. Bergh has stuck with continuity throughout the campaign.
The Griquas have already made history by becoming the first team to reach both the SA Cup and Currie Cup finals in the same year.
Saturday’s Currie Cup final between the Lions and the Peacock Blues at Ellis Park is set to kick off at 15:00, although SA Rugby has not yet officially confirmed the time.
