Cheetahs sharpen claws for Black Lion

The Toyota Cheetahs are champing at the bit ahead of next week’s opening game of the Toyota Challenge, when they take on Black Lion in Bloemfontein.

For the Cheetahs, it will be their first outing since losing to the Suzuki Griquas in the semi-finals of the Currie Cup.

With Black Lion also competing as an invitational team in the EPCR Challenge Cup, the two matches are ideal for the Cheetahs to gauge themselves and implement the lessons learnt from their Currie Cup campaign.

A bonus is several previously injured players are ready to return to action. Toward the end of the Currie Cup, the Cheetahs’ depth was tested due to a spate of injuries – particularly at flyhalf, where they were stretched thin.

The last time the Cheetahs faced Georgian opposition was in July, when they beat Georgia’s national team 24–20 in Bloemfontein. The Lelos were coached by Richard Cockerill, who also serves as head coach of Black Lion. He played a key role in bringing the Georgians back to Bloemfontein.

Star eighth-man Neels Volschenk told OFM Sport the team is eager to have a proper crack at the Georgian outfit and these games will be anything but friendlies.

“We had a break away from the game, which is always nice, but that said, it’s also exciting being back doing something we love.

“We’re gearing up for the EPCR, and to play against Black Lion in the next few weeks. Although they’re friendly matches, I haven’t met a rugby player who treats any match as just a friendly. Everyone wants to win, and that will be the same for us.

“We know how important these games are for our EPCR preparation. We’re training hard to identify and improve on the areas where we fell short during the Currie Cup – and that’s definitely going to help us heading into Europe.”

He said facing a team that also competes in the European competition will serve as valuable preparation.

“It’s great that we get the opportunity to play against Black Lion, since they’re also competing in the EPCR. It’ll give us an idea of where we stand against another side in the same competition, and where we still need to improve before heading abroad.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Black Lion to Bloemfontein, and we’re excited for the challenge of playing against them.”

Next Friday’s game between the Cheetahs and Black Lion at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 18:00.
