The Suzuki Griquas captain, Cebo Dlamini, is writing the next chapter of his 2025 rugby journey - this time in Wales.

After leading the Peacock Blues to a historic first Currie Cup title in 55 years, Dlamini has linked up with Welsh United Rugby Championship outfit, the Dragons, in Newport, and could make his debut this weekend against Connacht.

Earlier this season, Dlamini had a brief stint with the Sharks as a loan player, but he has now joined the Dragons on a short-term contract amid a crunch in their front-row stocks.

In an interesting twist of fate, Dlamini made his URC debut for the Sharks against the Dragons back in October, coming off the bench in a 17-17 draw at Rodney Parade. In December, he also made his Champions Cup debut, facing a heavy 56-19 defeat to French Top 14 giants, Toulouse, at Stade Ernest-Wallon.

Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia was full of praise for the 24-year-old front-rower.

“Cebo has linked up with us, quickly nailed his roles, and has been awesome,” said Tiatia.

“He’s a strong scrummager and a fast learner who picks things up quickly. Robert Hunt and Tinus de Beer have also been helping him settle in.

“Cebo is a great man of character. I’ve been impressed with the questions he asks and his deep understanding of the game.

“We’re a bit short in that position, so we’re grateful he’s accepted the opportunity to come and help. He’s a fantastic addition to the squad.”

Hunt, who played for the Toyota Cheetahs until the SA Cup concluded in May, faced Dlamini directly during the Free Staters last two matches in Kimberley, while De Beer - himself a former Griquas player from 2019 to 2021 - shares a similar rugby pedigree, both having come through the University of Pretoria Tuks system.

Saturday’s clash between the Dragons and Connacht at Rodney Parade kicks off at 21:45.
