Griffons step in as Cheetahs’ clash with EP is cancelled─── MORGAN PIEK 12:47 Mon, 16 Feb 2026
The Toyota Cheetahs will no longer make the trip to Cradock this weekend after Eastern Province called off Saturday’s crucial SA Cup warm-up clash.
The fixture, scheduled less than two weeks before the third edition of the SA Cup kicks off, was cancelled at the request of the Gqeberha-based outfit following a mounting injury crisis – particularly in the loosehead prop department.
EP’s troubles deepened after their recent hit-out against the South Western District Eagles. One loosehead suffered a torn bicep, while another was concussed.
The week before, in a warm-up against the Border Bulldogs, a third prop fractured a rib. Their fourth loosehead is only expected back in April.

The situation left EP with no choice but to take precautionary action. In fact, they were forced to play 45 minutes with uncontested scrums in their latest outing – far from ideal preparation ahead of a physically demanding SA Cup campaign.
EP Rugby general manager Mziwoxolo Mpofu stressed the decision was not taken lightly.
“This decision has not been taken lightly,” said Mpofu.
“Between 7 February and 14 February, we sustained three more injuries, primarily in the loosehead position. As a result, we are unable to continue playing without the necessary front-row players.”
“Unfortunately, we are currently facing a serious crisis regarding our loosehead props. After Saturday’s match against the SWD Eagles, we had two more injuries, which now brings the total to four injured loosehead props.
“As a result, we were forced to play 45 minutes with uncontested scrums.
“With the SA Cup fixtures fast approaching, we must prioritise player welfare and take precautionary measures to avoid further injuries ahead of this important competition.”

While it’s a disruption to the Cheetahs’ build-up, it may prove to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of travelling to Cradock, the Cheetahs will now host the Griffons in Bloemfontein on Wednesday afternoon at the Toyota Stadium. The Griffons come off a spirited showing against the defending Currie Cup champions, the Suzuki Griquas, in Welkom last week.
Although the visitors from Kimberley ran out convincing 63-26 winners, the Purple People Eaters asked far more questions than the scoreline suggests and showed plenty of grit – particularly in the scrums, where they held their own and at times even got the better of the Peacock Blues.

Despite boasting a relatively young squad, the Griffons punched well above their weight and will offer the Cheetahs a far sterner and more physical test up front.
For the Cheetahs, the revised fixture means less travel and an opportunity to fine-tune combinations closer to home. Wednesday’s clash at Toyota Stadium is set to kick off at 12:30.
