Koen shows encouraging signs as Griquas backline marshal─── MORGAN PIEK 10:39 Wed, 11 Mar 2026
The Suzuki Griquas coach, Pieter Bergh, was delighted with the debut of new flyhalf Liam Koen during the weekend’s SA Cup clash against the Leopards.
Koen slotted nine conversions and directed the backline with the composure of a seasoned campaigner as the Currie Cup champions cruised to a thumping 101–7 victory in Kimberley to kick off their season in emphatic fashion. The son of former Springbok and Stormers fly-half, Louis Koen, started the match as the backline general ahead of the vastly experienced George Whitehead.
Koen quickly showed that he possesses a deadly accurate boot off the tee, while also demonstrating that he has the all-round skill set required of a quality fly-half.
With the number 10 jersey effectively in his DNA, it comes as little surprise that he delivered such a polished performance. What is perhaps more surprising is that his true potential was not fully unleashed during his time with the Bulls in Pretoria.

The former Junior Springbok is, however, far from the finished product. With Griquas’ expansive style of play – particularly under Bergh – the coaching staff is focused on expanding his repertoire to develop him into a more complete backline general.
Bergh told OFM Sport that there were certainly plenty of encouraging signs from Koen’s first outing in the peacock blue jersey, although there is still work to be done as they continue to develop his running game to suit the team’s attacking approach.
“Liam did really well. He was quite nervous before the match because he really wanted to make an impact and play well, but I thought he handled it brilliantly,” said Bergh about the Paarl Gymnasium product.
“He worked extremely hard out there, and you could see he was tired towards the end because he’s not always used to the kind of running game we’re trying to play.
"In the past, he was often used more as a kicking fly-half, but we’re working on developing his running game and decision-making.
“What we already know is that his kicking game is exceptional. His line kicking, his tactical kicking out of hand, and his goal-kicking were all outstanding – he didn’t miss a kick. In that regard, he’s probably one of the best kickers in South Africa.

“Now it’s about adding more layers to his game, and we’re already seeing big strides in that area. Hopefully he can build on this performance, gain confidence and just keep improving.”
Despite Koen’s impressive start, Griquas are by no means looking to replace the experienced Whitehead any time soon. When the veteran – who turns 37 next week – entered the fray in the second half, he lifted the intensity of the backline attack and calmly added four conversions, once again underlining his immense value to the team.
Meanwhile, the Griquas will travel to Kempton Park on Saturday where they take on the Valke at the Barnard Stadium in their second SA Cup fixture.
