The Bulls have confirmed that versatile back David Kriel will leave the union at the end of the current season, bringing the curtain down on a memorable six-year stint in Pretoria.

The Potchefstroom-born Kriel, who hails from Bloemfontein, will head to France after signing with La Rochelle - an exciting new chapter for the 27-year-old back.

Still in the prime of his career, Kriel has already racked up an impressive 143 appearances for the Bulls, showcasing his versatility across fullback, inside and outside centre, and on the wing. A true utility back, he has been a reliable and consistent performer in the capital city. He was once describe by the former coach, Jake White, as his "Swiss Army Knife" of players due to his versatility.

Rugby runs deep in the Kriel family. David and his younger brother, Richard - currently with the Lions - both attended Grey College, where they starred in the 1st XV, and also represented the Free State at Craven Week, underlining their pedigree from a young age.

Kriel, who remains in Europe following the Bulls’ European Champions Cup defeat to the Glasgow Warriors, described his move abroad as both a challenge and a blessing.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be heading there - to experience French culture, meet new people, and continue doing what I love most,” said Kriel.

“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to my journey with the Bulls. I’m incredibly grateful to every coach, teammate, staff member and supporter for making my time here so special.

“I appreciate every opportunity I’ve had, and the growth - not just as a player, but as a person.

“Goodbyes are never easy, especially when it’s something that means so much to you. The Bulls have been home for the past six years, so it’s incredibly tough to say farewell.

“It was always a dream of mine to play for the Bulls, and I’m thankful to everyone who helped make that dream a reality.”

Kriel leaves behind an impressive legacy. He scored 321 points for the franchise - made up of 53 tries, 16 conversions and eight penalties - placing him 25th on the all-time points list. Notably, his 53 tries see him sit ninth on the Bulls’ all-time try-scoring chart, moving him ahead of Springbok great Bryan Habana as well as current stars Bok stars Kurt-Lee Arendse and Canan Moodie.

Kriel will officially begin his new journey in France in July, closing one chapter while eagerly embracing the next.
