The Suzuki Griquas forwards coach, Franco van der Merwe, has called for a dominant display upfront when they face the Pumas in Kimberley on Saturday in the SA Cup final.

The Pumas have built a reputation around their big, physical forward pack, which has become a cornerstone of their success in recent years. The Griquas, meanwhile, are renowned for their fearless approach, and they will relish the challenge ahead, particularly in the set-piece battle, where scrums and lineouts are expected to play a decisive role in the contest.

Both packs are licking their chops for the showdown and will be desperate to lay the perfect platform through strong set-piece dominance and quality front-foot ball.

Van der Merwe told OFM Sport that the Griquas need to be rock-solid in the set pieces, especially with the intensity and pressure that comes with a final.

“Every single game, the set-piece is very important, not just for us, but in any game,” said the former Lions and Springbok lock.

“Even if you look at international rugby, if you get good set-piece ball, it gives you front-foot possession, and then you can play around that.

“This weekend, obviously being a final, that’s going to be even more important. The set-piece will be a massive part of this game.

“It’s always been a big battle between the Pumas and us, especially up front. They’ve got a very good pack and quality forwards, and they’ve got a lot of guys back from injury.

“They showed on the weekend what they can do, especially up front and with their set-piece.”

Meanwhile, for the first time in this season’s competition, a TMO will be available for referee Christopher Allison to consult during the match.

Throughout the SA Cup campaign, there have been several contentious decisions, with referees having to make crucial calls without the assistance of television replays. That not only increased the pressure on the officials but may also have had an influence on the outcome of matches.

Van der Merwe welcomed the introduction of the TMO for the final, and it is an important game, and every decision can have a big impact on the outcome.

“I think it’s important for big matches. If you look back a few weeks ago to when we had to play against the Cheetahs, that was a massive game,” said Van der Merwe.

“Considering everything that was on the line, and this weekend is once again a trophy final. It’s great to get those kinds of appointments for the weekend, so we’re happy with that.”

Allison was also the referee when the Griquas beat the Pumas 46-24 in the final in Kimberley to win the inaugural SA Cup title in 2024. He furthermore took charge of the 2025 Currie Cup final, where the Peacock Blues edged the Lions 27-25 at Ellis Park with a late penalty to secure their first title in 55 years.

Griquas coach Pieter Bergh will name his side for the final on Thursday at noon, with continuity expected to be key in selection, barring any late injury-enforced changes.

Saturday’s grand finale between the Griquas and Pumas at the Suzuki Stadium kicks off at 18:30.
